Dr Kamini Desai Rao is from the Batch of 1971. She successfully completed her one year tenure as the President of the Federation of Obstetrics & Gynaecologist Society of India (FOGSI) on Jan 6th 2002. At the age of 46 she became the youngest person to hold this very coveted position.
After doing her MBBS at SJMC – she then went to the UK to further her studies and over 10 years she worked as Registrar and Senior Registrar at various hospitals having obtained her MRCOG and MCh. She was awarded the fellowship (FRCOG) in 1998. That not being enough she studied medico legal law and obtained a PG degree (PGDMLE) in year 2000.
She returned to India in 1990 to set up a successful fertility centre – Bangalore Assisted Conception Centre, in Bangalore, which has brought joy to numerous couples. She has the credit of producing India’s first Semen Intra Fallopian Transfer Baby and producing South India’s first ICSI baby through the Micromanipulation technique. She has also authored many books on infertility and foetal therapy.
In 1997, she received the prestigious Karnataka State Award (Rajyotsava Award). As FOGSI president, her theme was for “Safe Abortion - Saves Lives”, for which she has campaigned extensively, travelling through out India. Not only does she advocate for Women’s Health, but also for Women’s Status and Rights alongside.
She married her MBBS classmate Dr. Arvind Rao (who is a Gastroentrologist). She has a son Siddharth (21 yrs) and a daughter Vyshnavi ( 15 yrs).
