You may or may not know that the author of the Saint Johns Anthem was Dr Chittranajan Andrade from  Batch 1977.Dr CA as I call him, is Professor at NIMHANS Bangalore who known for many great things ,one being the recepient of the ignoble prize for his publication.He is also an author of many books ,journals, peer review articles and the list goes on.My intent  was to know more about how the Saint Johns Anthem came about, so I went to the source and requested him to send me a note.Here is the summary in his very own words.

A Personal Tribute To My Mentor Ashley D'Cruz

Ashley D'CruzDr Ashley D'cruz built  the department of pediatric surgery in St Johns from scratch while also performing the Yeoman task of being the Medical Superintendent of the hospital. After he left Saint Johns he became Director of the Narayana Hrudayalaya Women and Children's Institute.

He presently is the President of the Indian Association of Paediatric Surgeons and is already proving to be one of its most active presidents. He spearheads the difficult task of securing insurance for children with congenital anomalies. Dr D'cruz had started the pediatric liver transplant program when he was in St John’s and now has  successfully completed thirty Paediatric Liver transplants in Narayana Hrudayalaya. This is probably the biggest liver transplant program in the country for children .He plays a pivotal role in this mode of treatment, long thought to be near impossible in India.

What words do you convey to someone who is turning twenty five years soon and especially if she is someone who you have grown up with in your most impressionable years, A foster parent who in your formative years sheltered you, gave moments of joy and laughter, taught you about the tragedy of disease, the miracle of curing, the capacity to care and finally you set forth on your life’s profession with her blessing. What do you tell her, write to her or feel for her.?

 


As you search for words you are transported back in time and memories rapidly crowd a period of time of acquaintance with this lady. The first encounter in your teens when she choose form a multitude you with fifty nine others. The initial  months of joy and sorrow, of camaraderie, of fun and frolic, gradually giving way to a deeper understanding of your calling. Fed on legends flowing in her veins, of brilliance in every field, be it academic, physical or intellectual you strove to contribute your mite. As you grew up she too grew.
